Episode 11

On the C2C Podcast, Episode 11, we welcome Karin Wolok, Program Manager in Community development and enablement at Neo4j, an graph databasing company.

Karin Wolok is an expert at activating community. She helped build the international community at Neo4j, and worked with eager community members from all around the world who want to be a part of it. Karin knows what her members need, and what makes them tick - Graphs. Yes, graphs. Neo4j is after all, a graph databasing company.

With a community run events program, it's very rare to have all chapters all hosting events, every month (we consider Startup Grind to have high active monthly participation and they have about 75% participation per month). This can be for many reasons - conferences, industry busy times, vacations, even hemispheric season differences (it's summer in December some places in the world!). Even with all these factors, Karin realized that she could activate all her community chapters to host events in the same month. It's a trick we've seen other communities like Docker and Startup Grind use as well - theme months!

Leonhard Euler (1707-1783), the father of Graph Theory, and considered to be the most prolific mathematician in history, was born in April. Karin knew that her graph-loving community, wouldn't just know who Leonhard Euler is, but would absolutely want to celebrate him too. So, she built a campaign around the famous man's birthday called Global Graph Celebration Day. With just the announcement of the day, over 50 cities kicked into gear and began planning events to coincide.
